Local reports in Berlin are saying security has been beefed up around Werder Bremen’s home Bundesliga clash against second-placed VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday, following a warning from German police about the possibility of a terrorist attack in the Hanseatic City.

Bremen police are reported to have increased their presence in Bremen’s central areas due to a warning of possible Islamic terrorist activity in the city, from Federal police, on Friday night.

“The Bremen police department has increased its presence in the city and stepped up protective measures in public areas,” a Bremen police spokesman told the press.

Werder has said the league match will not be postponed, and that “the club are in constant contact with the police’s operations center.”

“At the moment, there are no thoughts of postponing,” Werder’s general manager Thomas Eichin was quoted as saying. “But we will monitor the situation constantly.”

As well, it is being reported that security will be increased around the club’s 42,100-capacity Weserstadion ground before and during the match.

Werder Bremen is a German sports club located in Bremen in the northwest German federal state Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. The match is considered as one of the league’s top clashes this weekend with Bremen undefeated in their last six matches, bringing them from the from last to eighth.

Berlin press is also saying other sports venues in the region “could be affected on Sunday with Bremerhaven meeting Oldenburg in a Bundesliga basketball match, with a crowd of 9,000 expected.”
