Fernando Botero, known as the “Picasso of Latin America,” will be returned to London on March 3 for the first time in 25 years to exhibit a selection of his most unique and extreme paintings from his latest collection “The Circus.”

The exhibition is being held at Thomas Gibson Fine Art in Mayfair from now to April 8, 2009 and will include Botero’s Circus Girl Seated (2008), Trainer (2008) and Two Lady Acrobats (2008).

The Colombian artist, who was 16 when his first illustration was published in a national newspaper, is an internationally renowned artist who currently lives and works in Paris, Monte Carlo, Pietrasanta and New York.

Botero’s work has been exhibited all over the world, including the Guggenheim Museum, Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His work encompasses paintings and sculptures and is noted for their exaggerated proportions and the corpulence of the human and animal figures. He has been likened to such artists as Seurat, Lautrec and Chagall.

Born in Medellin, known as the city of “Eternal Spring” and the home of the Museo de Antioquia, which houses a selection of Botero’s work that he personally donated to the organization some 10 years ago as a contribution to a social program aimed at the regeneration of the center of the city. Botero’s philanthropy was often low profile until then.

His donation to Museo de Antioquia and also to Bogota (Botero Museum) was valued in U$200 million. The program also saw the creation of ‘Plaza Botero’ located right opposite Museo de Antioquia and has a great selection of the artist’s sculptures.
